Cross Border Apprenticeship Training - NSW Arrangements

Issued: 21 December 2001

Apprenticeships
Cross border agreements are in place with Victoria and the ACT that allow NSW apprentices to enrol in the Canberra Institute of Technology, and any Victorian TAFE. No approval is required for apprentices to enrol across borders in these TAFE colleges and the ‘host’ state takes responsibility for payment.

For all other cross border apprenticeship training, NSW will approve interstate RTOs to deliver training to NSW registered apprentices where interstate training is the only practical option available. This approval is managed on a case-by-case basis by the local DET Industry Training Centre. There is no open tendering for apprenticeship training in border regions. NACs, employers and/or their apprentices should apply to the local Senior Program Field Officer for approval prior to approaching an interstate RTO.

The following criteria will be used to assess eligibility:

  • TAFE NSW has confirmed that there is no practical training option available in NSW.
  • The interstate RTO has the appropriate qualification on their scope of registration to meet the vocational training order (VTO) requirements.
  • The interstate RTO is willing to enter a contract with NSW and deliver training at the NSW unit price.
  • Where approval is not granted on the basis that an alternative training option is available in NSW, the apprentice can still enrol with an interstate RTO at their own or their employer’s cost, as long as the training complies with the relevant VTO requirements.
