Building and Construction - Apprenticeship

Date of effect: 23 October 2009

The Vocational Training Order for the trade vocation of Wall and Ceiling Lining has been varied to upgrade the qualification to that from CPC08 Construction, Plumbing and Services Integrated Framework Training Package.

Qualifications, structure and packaging

CPC08 Construction, Plumbing and Services Integrated Framework Training Package includes 55 qualifications ranging from Certificate I to Vocational Graduate Certificate. One qualification supports the apprenticeship pathway. Click on CPC31208 Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining for details.

Industrial arrangements

Applications to establish apprenticeships whether full-time or school based will not be approved unless the Commissioner for Vocational Training is satisfied that appropriate industrial arrangements are in place.

School based apprenticeships

CPC31208 Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining is suitable for delivery in schools.

Registered training organisations

For registered training providers which can deliver the apprenticeship qualification go to National Training Information Service.

Transition arrangements

Transition arrangements allow the delivery of old and new trade qualifications, for three months after the date of effect of the new Vocational Training Order. See here.

Job descriptions

This qualification provides a trade outcome in the wall and ceiling lining sector. It covers skills common to the construction industry, as well as specialist fields of work in wall and ceiling lining.

Apprentices will learn to:

  • fix standard plasterboard sheets to walls and ceilings
  • fix battens and mixing plastering compounds
  • install, apply and finish plasterboard, fibre cement sheeting, pre-cast fibrous plaster sheets and mouldings, partitions and suspended ceiling systems
  • plan and organise work
  • carry out measurements and calculations
  • read and interpret plans and specifications
  • apply Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

Licensing

There are two areas of licensing applicable to CPC08 qualifications. The first is for high risk works. The second is home building licensing for trade contractors and builders, which pertains to employment in the general construction industry. Further information is available from the NSW Office of Fair Trading.

Course of study

CPC31208 Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining

Terms of training

Full time:

  • CPC31208 Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining by direct entry
    • 48 months or until the relevant competencies are achieved

  • CPC31208 Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining where the apprentice holds CPC20108 Certificate II in Construction Pathways or CPC20208 Certificate II in Construction
    • 44 months or until the relevant competencies are achieved

School based

CPC31208 Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining

Training shall be given for a nominal period of five years comprising:

  • two years part-time while at school where the apprentice will undertake 144 days of work-based training; and
  • three years full-time post school or until the relevant competencies are achieved,

Probationary period

3 months
