NSW Public Sector Apprenticeship Strategy 2008-2010

The NSW Public Sector Apprenticeship Strategy sets out the approach taken by the NSW Government to increase the number of apprenticeships in public sector employment. As well as improving the effectiveness of public sector agencies, the strategy aims to strengthen NSW’s skills base and create the workforce we need for the future.

The NSW Government is committed increasing the number of apprentices employed in the public sector and has set a 10 per cent annual target to increase the number of apprenticeships to over 700 per year by 2010. To achieve this, the Apprenticeship Strategy contains measures to spread awareness of best practice and support agencies in their employment and retention of apprentices.

The Apprenticeship Strategy will also review how state procurement can be used to encourage the private sector to take on more apprentices and trainees. This is particularly relevant to sectors such as construction and civil engineering, where the government has ambitious plans and persistent skills shortages are an issue in NSW.

The NSW Public Sector Apprenticeship Strategy is a joint initiative of the Department of Education and Training and the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Public Sector Workforce Office, under the auspices of the NSW Skills Council. It was launched on 1 August 2008 and all Ministers and Director-Generals have been informed of the Strategy in writing.
